Scholarship Presentation and Reception
Awarding 63 College Scholarships to Local Underserved Youth and Adults
The Hispanic Chamber Foundation, El Cinco de Mayo, Inc., the American GI
Forum and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado, in cooperation
with the El Pomar Foundation, hosted their 4th Annual Scholarship Presentation
and Reception held Thursday, August 9th at the Penrose House at El Pomar.
Over 200 people attended the Scholarship Reception which included scholarship
winners and their family and friends, scholarship donors and host of community
leaders and VIPs. Some attendees included Mayor Lionel Rivera, Interim Vice
Chancellor for Student Success at UCCS Robert Wonnet, Colorado Technology
University President Greg Mitchell, Trustees of the El Pomar Foundation and El
Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa.
Former Colorado Springs Police Chief Luis Velez had two scholarships in his
name. Mr. Velez was in attendance with his family.
Guest speaker was Ms. Juana Bordas, author of "Salsa, Soul & Spirit, Leadership
in a Multicultural Age". Each scholarship recipient in attendance received a
copy of her book.
The Colorado Springs Hispanic Chamber Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization dedicated to receiving grants and donations in order to grant
scholarships to underserved high school students and adults pursuing a college
degree.
